A new summer quiche, created by Monkseaton Middle School pupils Olivia Forbes and Mollie Leach, both 14, has gone on sale at Nicholson’s Butchers.
The Parma Ham, Roasted Vegetables and Smoked Cheese quiche taking pride of place in the family-owned Whitley Bay butchers is the winning recipe in a competition set by Kathryn Nicholson for Year 8 pupils in April, when she challenged them to come up with a summer quiche to sell in May.
Kathryn judged the first stage of the competition in the school with teacher Mrs Martin, when two shortlisted recipes were selected. Last weekend, the two quiches went head to head in a taste test at the Park View shop when customers were invited to pick their favourite.
Over 80 votes were cast with Olivia and Mollie’s quiche coming top in a close-run competition with Zak Gibling and Serena Hogarth’s Kale, Bacon, Potatoes and Goat’s Cheese Quiche. Voters’ comments included: “They both taste fantastic,” “what a great idea!” “ I am finding it very difficult to choose,” “we loved both but thought the Parma ham gave a great edge,” “I am not sure on the kale but loved the idea of potatoes in a quiche,” “love new ideas and products and love free samples even more!”
Monkseaton teacher Mrs Martin said: “It was really exciting when Kathryn agreed without hesitation to work with Monkseaton Middle School to run the competition. This meant that the pupils could design and make a quiche to suit the needs of an actual business and their customers. It enabled the pupils to consider seasonality, cost, quality as well as flavour and appearance.
“I was extremely impressed with the sophisticated flavour combinations, amazing pastry and crimped edging produced by all the pupils. Kathryn came into school to judge the quiches and she provided the pupils with very positive feedback and spent time discussing the world of work with them. It was lovely to work with a local business to provide such an opportunity, thank you.”
Pupils Olivia and Mollie said: “We are looking forward to seeing the quiche idea on sale in the butchers and talking to the customers who will buy our product.”
Kathryn Nicholson is delighted with the results of the competition. “Both the flavour combinations went down extremely well with our customers. We’re very grateful to everyone who has taken part in this competition, the pupils and staff at the school and of course our customers who gave us some great feedback. The winning quiche is now on sale in the shop, and we’re also happy to take orders for bigger quiches for special occasions and parties now the bbq season is almost here!”
Well done guys x
