About Us

Having enjoyed four generations of Nicholsons at the helm, we’re incredibly proud of our family business. We have always occupied the same premises on Whitley Bay’s Park View and enjoy our position at the centre of our community. From here, we strive to deliver excellence, every day.

Provenance

Our skilled and experienced butchery team visits farms across Northumberland to hand-select the very best produce. We support local farmers with the same vision of welfare, care and outstanding quality and seek only to source ethically reared meat.

We take our time

Skilled and experienced in traditional, hand-prepared butchery, our team will never sacrifice quality to save time. We find the highest quality produce and keep food miles to a minimum by working with long-established local farmers. We know this dedication is reflected in the taste and quality of our meats and baked goods. Because you tell us so.

Each of our products is prepared in our shop, by our own team. We use recipes and processes passed down through the generations for more than 100 years – because we know you expect the very best from Nicholson’s, and we’re only too happy to deliver.

Our Heritage

A proud history

Our family butcher shop has stood in its current position, at the heart of Whitley Bay, since 1914. Established by Charles Nicholson, it was later taken over by his son – who many of our current customers may remember as Charles ‘Charlie’ Nicholson. Charlie’s son Doug took over the business when he returned from several years as a deep-sea engineer in the Merchant Navy. Mark, Doug’s nephew has worked for the business for more than 20 years and works alongside Kathryn as the fourth generation to run the business.

Investing in quality

Nicholson’s became one of the first-ever members of the national Butchers Q Guild in the 1960s. We’re regularly inspected to make sure we’re adhering to the exacting standards of the Guild and are proud to have remained members for over 50 years.

Award winning

Our team and shop have won many awards over the years, both nationally and internationally, including being highly recommended by Gourmet Britain – Best of British Food, when the business was described as “an excellent butcher, specialising in local meat, poultry and seasonal game.”

Butchers, bakers, sausage roll makers

As well as providing incredible quality meat cuts, we also use our family recipes to create ready-to-cook meals, alongside pies, quiches and sausage rolls, all handmade on the premises. Our bakers are constantly working to tweak and improve the recipes we use to make sure you’re taking home the tastiest treats.
